Chettinad Milagai Chutney Method -2


Serving: 4 | Type: Tiffin –Side Dish/ chutney/ Pillayar Nombu



For Grind:

Red Chili -8 to 10
Red Onion or shallot -1 cup
Tomato 1 cup
Tamarind -small Gooseberry size
Garlic -3 pods
Salt -to taste



Sesame Oil -4  to 6tbsp
Mustard -1tsp
Urad Dhal -1tsp
Curry Leaves -few
Onion(minced) -2tbsp
Tomato(minced) -1tbsp
Garlic(minced) -1




  1. Grind the Ingredients given above.
  2. Not very fine paste but not too coarse.
  3. Take a pan, heat with oil, add seasonings and fry without burning.
  4. Then add onion, garlic sauté for a minute then add tomato sauté until tomato gets soft.
  5. Then add ground paste, cook until raw smell goes and chutney gets thick.
  6. Serve with idly, dosa or Vellai paniyaram.


  1. If you use red onion or shallot taste will be authentic.
  2. If you use any other onion please refer my  chettinad Milagai chutney.
