Palak Pappu (Spinach with Thur Dhal Gravy)

Serving:  4 to 6 | Type: Kootu



Spinach (chopped) -3 cups
Thur Dhal (¾th Cooked) -1 cup
Chili Powder -1 tsp
Turmeric Powder -1 tsp
Onion -½ cup
Tomato -½ cup
Tamarind extract -2 tbsp
Salt -to taste
Water -½ to 1cup



Oil -1 tbsp
Mustard -1 tsp
Urad Dhal -1 tsp
Cumin -1 tsp
Asafotida -¼ tsp
Curry Leaves -few
Red Chili -1
Green Chili -1



  1. In a pan, heat with oil, add all the seasoning and fry without burning.
  2. Next add onion, sauté until translucent.
  3. Then add tomato, turmeric powder and half of the salt.
  4. Let the tomatoes get smashed.
  5. Add the chopped spinach and sauté for 1-3 minutes.
  6. Then add the chili powder, tamarind extract with the water.
  7. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  8. Next add the cooked dhal and mix well.
  9. Then let it cook for another minute.
  10. Add rest of the salt and then turn off the stove
  11. Serve with white rice


  1. For extra flavor you add garlic along with the onions.
  2. If you prefer a more liquid consistency add more water along with the tamarind extract.
