Podalankai thovayal(Snake Guard Chutney)

Podalankai (diced) -1 cup
Tamarind -small marble size
Garlic(optional) -2
Cumin -½tsp
Salt -to taste



Oil -1tbsp
Mustard -1tsp
Urad Dhal -2tbsp
Chana Dhal -2tbsp
Green  Chili -6 to 8
Asafotida -pinch
Curry leaves -few



  1. Take a pan heat with oil add seasoning fry until dals get golden brown then take out and keep it aside.
  2. Same pan add podalankai fry 3 to 4 minutes and let it cool.
  3. Take a seasonings  put it in the blender grind without water .
  4. Not very fine and very coarse then add podalankai, tamarind, cumin , garlic and salt grind it like coarse.
  5. Serve  hot white rice with ghee.


  1. Fresh podalankai is not available in your area you can use frozen podalankai.
  2. Instead of green chili you can use red chili or combine both chilies.
  3. This chutney should be spicy and little tangy.
