Tadka Dhal(Lentil Seasoning)

Masoor Dhal -1cup
Mung Dhal -½ cup
Turmeric -½tsp
Onion(cut) -½tsp
Tomato(diced) -2
Ginger -1inch
Garlic -2
Red Chili -2
Kalonji(onion seeds) -1tsp
Ghee -2tsp
Mustard -1tsp
Salt -to taste
Sugar -1tsp
Butter -2tsp
Coriander Leaves -few



  1. Boil the dhal with water and keep it aside.
  2. Pound Ginger garlic and keep it aside.
  3. Cut the onion lengthwise and keep it aside.
  4. Take a pan heat with ghee add mustard, kalonji and red chili fry without burning.
  5. Now add onion , pounded ginger garlic with little salt and turmeric sauté for 1 or 2 minute.
  6. Then add tomato sauté until tomato get mash then add cooked dhal with 1 or 2 cups of water.
  7. Boil it for 5 to 10 minutes.
  8. Then add remaining salt and sugar.
  9. Garnish with butter and coriander leaves.
  10. Serve with roti, naan, or fried rice.


  1. Masoor dhal is known as orange lentil.
